| Carefree, and its sister city Cave Creek,
have captivated travelers for decades. The area’s scenery is a testament
to its allure with dramatic boulder formations scattered across the desert
floor, some teetering on others creating mysterious vistas. The boulders
shine with a warm reddish-brown patina called “desert varnish”.
Many contain petroglyphs sketched out in a darker tone by ancient Indians.
The town of Carefree was founded just 40 years ago in a desert basin between Phoenix and Cave Creek.
